Why hire a Doula?A doula is a professionally trained individual who supports women before, during, and after birth. She helps women emotionally and physically plan and prepare for the birth they desire and then works alongside the woman and her partner; giving them support as they work to bring their baby into the world and adjust to life with a newborn for the first, or second, or twelfth time.
Women who have a professional doula report better satisfaction with their birth experience whether they ultimately choose medicated or un-medicated, vaginal or surgical births. Fathers report being able to relax and focus more on the mother, reassured by having an objective third party and someone who can help normalize and encourage them when the birthing process intensifies. What does a Doula do?A doula may do a variety of things during pregnancy and labor.
She will be available to answer questions and direct parents to research and articles as they make their decision on what is best for their pregnancy and birth. She will help by offering information and assist in practicing techniques to encourage the baby to be in the best position for the easiest labor and birth. During labor she'll reassure the laboring woman and provide physical comfort; possibly through massage, suggesting different positions, and reminding the mother of breathing & relaxation. She will assist the mother's partner in supporting the mother and help support her in communicating her needs both to her partner and the medical professionals attending her. She can provide information and explanations of events that may occur during labor. If a cesarean is planned, a doula can support a mother as she discusses with her surgeon what she would like that experience to be and guide her through the process of communicating with hospital, anesthesiologists, and others involved to help make the operating room the best environment possible for welcoming and bonding with baby. After birth, a doula will help the new family get settled with bonding and initiate breastfeeding, if the mother wishes to do so. A few days or weeks later a doula may reconnect with the family to help them process their experience and assist with any questions that may have come up since their little one entered the world. What does a Doula NOT do?A doula does not provide medical care. She will not check baby's heartrate, perform vaginal exams, keep track of blood pressure, or "catch" the baby.
She does not diagnose medical conditions or give medical advice. She does not take the place of the father or other partner. She doesn't not speak for the mother or interfere with the medical staff. |
